Netflix review: Watch It Now or Skip It!Netflix's latest holiday series, The Princess Switch 3, is now available. But have we seen enough Vanessa Hudgens yet? Is this a franchise that will last?
Vanessa Hudgens reunites with Vanessa Hudgens and Vanessa Hudgens in The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, the latest installment in Netflix's current reigning holiday franchise. Hudgens' evil girl Fiona, however, takes the film's lead. This movie celebrates more capers than Christmas. Is this franchise still a dominant force, or is it time to be thrown out?
The Git: Vanessa Hudgens, Lady Margaret and Stacy Hudgens are back, this time with the task of staging a festive celebration just as they did in days past. It doesn't get any better than decorating the Christmas tree with the Star of Peace tree topper, which was once owned by St. Nicholas. The Star of Peace is stolen and our favorite royal looksalikes must turn to Lady Fiona (Vanessa Hudgens), a troublemaking fraudster who created a lot of problems last Christmas. Will Fiona be able to reclaim the Star of Peace from Will Kemp? Will she find love with Remy Hii, her spy ally? How much will there be less switching? It's better to do a lot of moving!
Which Movies will it Remind you Of?: Fast Five. I'm not even joking. The Princess Switch 3 is a completely unplanned movie that turns the latest Netflix holiday romcom into an heist film starring wild characters from previous films. This film features scenes where the romcom couple from The Princess Switch gather in a room together with the doofuses of The Princess Switch: Switched Yet. They are given the details by a superspy who, if lucky enough, will be returning for The Princess Switch 4. Frank, who plays the role of the castle's chief of staff/gopher, is now a full-fledged player on the team. This franchise is so, so, so far away from being about a baker swapping places with a princess—and that is a fantastic place for it to be.
Watch Fiona is back with her besties Reggie and Mindy (Ricky Norwood, Florence Hall). It really is Reggie and Mindy's completely superfluous return that makes The Princess Switch 3 feel so next level ridiculous—in the best way. Because three Vanessas Hudgens is too much for one movie, there's an option where Fiona only returns. This movie may be okay, but it doesn't stand out among the many other holiday movies this year. We get a movie where Reggie, Fiona, and Mindy fight like step-siblings, and Reggie continues to injure himself. It's madcap holiday mayhem with a ridiculously large cast that feels way grander in scale than anything on Hallmark or Lifetime—and Reggie and Mindy are to blame and definitely thank.
Memorable Dialog: Hudgens plays Fiona. She uses a bizarrely perfect accent I cannot describe but it describes her relationship with Hunter Cunard, a hotel tycoon and criminal. Now, I have to inform you that the expression 'we had some steamy' has become standard and should be replaced by 'we hooked-up'.
Holiday Tradition: Princess Switch 3 celebrates the revival of an old festival, but it's really about having a brand new Vanessa Hudgens Netflix vacation movie to enjoy for the fourth consecutive year. This tradition will never be lost.
Is the Title Meaningful?: It absolutely does not—unless Romancing the Star is a play on Romancing the Stone? Which—maybe it is? The film has a star, but it's not trying to win over St. Nicholas. You're lost if you read the title and your mind doesn't immediately go to a 37-year old action/romance/comedy movie. C'mon—The Princess Switch 3: Holiday Heist is right there.
Our take: Given the history of Netflix's holiday movies, it was nerve-wracking to enter The Princess Switch 3. While the Christmas Chronicles, and Princess Switch were both fine last year, they gave the impression that the premises had been stretched too thin. Don't get me started about the dreadful, dull A Holiday Prince sequels. Netflix's track record in sequels is abysmal!
The record scratch that you hear is princess Switch 3. This album completely skips the previous Christmas followups and does something totally different. This movie is primarily a Heist Film. The romantic aspects of Fiona's relationship with Peter, her spy man, are all there, but it is the Mission: Impossible romance that takes the longest.
Romcom sequels can be impossible to pull off because the central conflict—will the baker get with the prince, etc.—has been resolved. Instead of rehashing that, Romancing the Star gets to have fun teaching characters how to scale walls and dodge laser traps like Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment—and yes, how to switch with each other. If there isn't some sort of switching happening, it's not a Princess Flash movie.
The Princess Switch 3 is still a hilarious and enjoyable movie. This is due to Hudgens' portrayal of Fiona who now leads the franchise. The shift to the eccentric and silly fashionista ensures longevity. The first film featured Stacy, a down-to-earth actress and Lady Margaret as the lead characters. However, they have little to do now that both are settled. Fiona is, however, feisty, and surprising complex in comparison. Fiona is a gift that never stops giving, and I've not even mentioned her style.
All hail our true Christmas queen.
The Princess Switch 3 - Romancing the Star is an unexpected addition to this series. However, it's just what the franchise required.
